Okinawan-Foreign Trade Rise Last Year

Date Posted: 2000-10-06

Direct trade between Okinawa and foreign countries rose 5.7% last year, according to statistics released by Okinawa District Customs Office. Okinawan exports consist mainly of recycled paper, junk cars, cosmetics, fishery products and used machine parts. The imports, vastly outpacing the exports, consist of meat products, food, oil, wood, heavy equipment and other industrial products. No one can accuse Okinawa of contributing to the Japanese trade imbalance, however, as imports consist of 98 percent of the trade whereas exports are only a miniscule 2 percent of the total.
