Souvenir Shop Has Bugs, Mold, Dirt

Date Posted: 2000-10-06

There have been frequent complaints have been about the quality of goods sold at the prefecture owned “Washita Shop” that sells Okinawan souvenirs and local products at its shop in Naha’s Kokusai Street. Many customers have complained that they have discovered mold, dirt and even bugs in the packages.

Officials say that the shop has received 47 complaints this year. They say that in order to improve the situation, they are preparing a set of improved rules that make the product sanitation and quality a priority. They also intend to conduct more inspections by themselves instead of relying mostly on inspections by the producers.

They say that the increase in complaints is partly because the sales in the shop have increased drastically in the wake of this year’s G-8 Summit. However, they admit that many of the complaints are well founded and improvements are needed.
