Goya-man Debuts

Date Posted: 2001-04-28

Goya-man, a character that appeared in the NHK’s popular morning drama “Chura-san,” that has almost the entire population of the island glued to their TV sets every weekday mornings, is about to debut in the real world.

Goya, or the bitter melon that is commonly used in Okinawan dishes, was characterized to “Goya-man” in the drama. NHK did not intend to commercialize the character, but decided to do so after the character was introduced on TV and magazines, and the company started getting an unexpected number of inquires.

In the drama, the “Goya-man” character was decidedly a flop, but supermarkets and souvenir shops in Okinawa have decided to start selling the character as key-chains, mobile phone straps, pens and other trinkets. These items will appear in shops by the 28th of this month. Contrary to the miserable commercial success of the character in the drama, the shops are counting on a boom in its popularity in the real-life market place.
