Comic Book Features Children of Hatoma

Date Posted: 2001-04-28

A comic serial (strip) depicting foster children in Hatoma Island located north of Iriomote Island has started in a monthly comic book called Big Comic Original from Apr. 20 issue. The name of the cartoon strip is “Hikari no Shima” meaning “Island of light.” The story is based on a book titled “Begging Children.” All names are imaginary but the comic strip focuses on issues affecting the current Japanese education. It examines problems facing isolated and under-populated islands, and foster children. In reality Hatoma Island started a foster program a few years ago as a desperate decision in order to stop the decrease in its population. The program turned out very positively for children and the island. The author of Big Comic Original, Akira Oze found the strip very interesting.
