Police break open safecracking ring

Date Posted: 2002-01-10

Tomigusuku police on Friday arrested two 25-year-old men on suspicion of theft and safecracking in an operation that extended as far away as Osaka and Tokyo. Two other accomplices in their early twenties who had previously been taken into custody were indicted on Tuesday. According to the police report, the four suspects allegedly broke into offices and cracked safes using special tools, causing damage in excess of ・30 million. The men have reportedly admitted to the charges as well as to 60 other similar cases in Tokyo and Osaka. Police are investigating their involvement in additional crimes. The suspects had allegedly stolen a wiretapping device from an office in Tomigusuku in 1999 as well as 300 telephone cards in Ginowan City. Using skills picked up from magazines, the men were fabricating the tools themselves and also stealing them from specialty key shops. Two of the suspects had been arrested in December for breaking into an accountant痴 office in Tomigusuku. Their connection to the other two men came to light during the ensuing interrogation.
