Recycling Plant for Junk Cars Opens

Date Posted: 2001-04-28

One of Okinawa’s worst eyesores is the large number of junked cars that are left rusting on fields and roadsides. Now there may be some help for the problem. A plant that recycles junked cars was completed Friday in Gushikawa City.

Using its know-how of steal scrapping, Takunan Co. has designed this plant since Jan. ’99. The plant reportedly has succeeded in recycling almost a hundred percent of steel used in a car. Plastic parts of a car are reproduced into fuels. Company officials claim that their plant is so effective that only 15 kilograms of a typical car cannot be recycled. Using conventional methods about 300 kilograms per car are left un-recyclable.

The plant’s recycling effectiveness is considered to be the best in the nation, and Takunan Co. is now applying a patent. The new plant’s total construction and design cost about ¥400 million.
