Awase Bay Tideland Conservation Urged

Date Posted: 2001-04-28

A committee to conserve Awase tideland in Eastern coast of Okinawa City has collected over 2,500 signatures as of Sunday. The aim of the group is to collect enough signatures from the citizens to force Okinawa City assembly to vote on the question whether or not the City should proceed in reclaiming the tideland.

The group says that it has already enough signatures needed to submit the proposal. Only 1,800 signatures were needed to force the issue. The members say that they are still getting quite many positive inquiries and are looking to reach at least 5,000 signatures by the end of the month which they have set as the deadline.

Another environmental network conducted a survey on this issue and announced the results on Tuesday. According to this survey, about 70 percent of citizens of Okinawa City say the reclamation is unnecessary. The survey also found that the citizens hardly know the fact that the City pays a share of the cost of the reclamation. The group demanded that the city reconsiders the plan as decided by popular vote.
