Date Posted: 2000-09-22

Another Japan Self Defense Air Force fighter jet experienced trouble at Naha Airport when the F4 Phantom landing gear failed to retract upon take off. The fighter immediately returned. The incident caused the flightline to close for five minutes causing delays of up to 25 minutes for commercial flights. Airport officials dispatched 11 fire engines to the runway as a precaution, but the fighter landed without incident.

This is the second time within a week that a JSDAF fighter has had trouble at Naha Airport. Another F4 fighter experienced engine trouble on the 19th that forced the aircraft to return.

JSDAF Naha Airbase is located next to Naha Airport and its fighters use the same runways as commercial airliners, making Naha Airport one of the busiest in the nation. Naha Mayor’s Office planned to send a letter of protest to the Naha Air Base commander.
