Voting Rights Proposed for All Foreigners

Date Posted: 2000-09-22

Representatives of Komeito Party, a current government ally of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party have voiced their opposition to the ruling party’s plan to grant voting rights in local elections only to permanent foreign residents from Taiwan and Korea and their descendents.

The party says that limiting voting rights to residents with a permanent visa only from certain countries does not go far enough. They want to extend the voting rights to all foreign residents with permanent visas.

Many members of the LDP oppose giving the foreigners the voting rights and the proposal by LDP General Secretary Hiromu Nonaka for a suffrage limited to those from Taiwan and Korea, is seen as an attempt for a compromise within the party. Koreans and Taiwanese form the largest proportion of foreign residents in Japan.
