Awamori Summit Held in Tokyo

Date Posted: 2001-04-28

Ryukyu Awamori Summit 2001 was held Sunday at a hotel in Tokyo. The purpose of the event was to promote the Okinawan brew and increase the sales in mainland. About 150 retailers and distributors participated.

The event began with a market report and lecture by Awamori makers. After Awamori tasting, people from 11 brewers held a panel discussion with the participants. One of the organizers says Awamori consumption has been rapidly increased since 98. He says the reasons for expanding sales and an increase in the number of Awamori lovers are partly the Okinawa G-8 Summit that made people more aware of Okinawa, and the increased number of tourists visiting the prefecture. He added that mainlanders increasingly accept original and different taste of Awamori.
