Residents Extend 30 Year Quarry Refusal

Date Posted: 2000-09-22

Residents at Yamazato, Motobu Town, are fighting to stop a company quarrying in their area. Plans for hacking out the quarry in the area have been around for 30 years but all attempts have failed because of the opposition by the local residents. Residents say that the hill where the planned quarry would be is one of a kind in all Japan and should be preserved.

In the latest meeting between residents and representatives of the company, the residents flatly rejected the company’s offer of cash and landscape work on the residential area, in exchange for the permission to start the quarry.

The company obtained a permission to start the quarry from the Prefecture General Bureau back in 1968 but has not been able to begin the project because of the persistent opposition of local residents.
