Companies Gave Generous Slice of G-8 Funds

Date Posted: 2000-09-29

Donations from local companies towards the Okinawa G-8 Summit totaled 246,470,000, about 70 percent of the target of the 300 million prefectural officials at the Summit Promotion Committee had set their sights on. The total budget of the committee was 900 million, half of which came from the central government and the rest from local municipalities and companies.

The money was used for receptions and promotional events and programs undertaken by the prefecture. This money did not include various construction and other projects, mostly funded by the central government in Tokyo.

Estimates of the total cost of the Summit ran as high as 80 billion. The most generous of local corporate donors was the Okinawa Electric Power Co. which donated 35 million, followed by Orion Beer and San-Ei supermarket chain.
