2.35 Million Stolen From Private House

Date Posted: 2000-09-29

A thief stole 2,350,000 in cash from a private household in Nago City Tuesday. The money was stashed away in a box in a filing cabinet. The money disappeared during daytime while the family was out of the house. The cabinet had been locked but the thief had opened it by using a screwdriver.

Nago Police are investigating the theft. Because of the practice of paying most of the bills in cash, many Okinawans, especially in rural areas, often keep large sums of cash in their houses instead of banks.

The banks are often critical of the practice as they see it limiting the economic development of the prefecture by keeping large amounts o money away from books. Of course, they would also rather see people paying transaction fees when they are paying their bills through banks.
