Kimono Fair Returns To Okinawa

Date Posted: 2000-09-29

A Kimono Fair last March attracted so much interest in Okinawa that another one is being staged next week. New kimonos are usually astronomically expensive, but because they are often used only once or twice on special occasions, there is a market in second-hand but hardly used kimonos. At the Kimono Fair they are being sold at between a tenth and a fifth of the original price, which is comparable to buying ordinary clothes. Regular, washable and black kimonos for wedding guests will be available, as will center table obis and silk textiles. Starting prices range from 1000 to 3000. Staff from Takikawa, a used kimono shop in Tokyo will be on hand to help anyone who wants to try on a kimono. The Kimono Fair takes place at Shuri Melpark by Miyako Hotel in Shuri on Friday October 6 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Sunday October 8 the Fair continues at Okinawa Convention Center from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Monday October 9 10 a.m to 6 p.m. For more information call 03-5471-5171.
