Marine held on suspicion of vandalism

Date Posted: 2003-02-28

A Marine sergeant stationed at Camp Hansen has been arrested on suspicion of vandalism after he was found standing on the street in front of a nighttime nursery school bleeding from the hand. Police suspect that the serviceman had thrown stones through the windows of the school, breaking some of them. Investigators say a woman who had come to pick up her child saw the Marine standing in front of the school, and called the police.

When questioned, the sergeant denied that he had broken the windows. He also could not give a reason why he was standing on the street, or how he had injured his hand. Police say the Marine appeared to be strongly under the influence of alcohol at the time of his arrest. A police investigation continues.
