Garage Owner Arrested for Inspection Fraud

Date Posted: 2001-04-20

Okinawa Prefecture and Okinawa City Police has arrested an owner of an authorized private car inspection garage in Okinawa City, a car repair shop owner in Urasoe City and an car inspection agency owner in Chatan Town on suspicion of bribery.

The authorized garage owner was allegedly receiving money from the owners of the car repair shop and inspection agency in exchange of approving semiannual mandatory car inspections without actually making any inspections. According to Japanese rules an authorized car inspector who has the right to approve and stamp official car inspection papers is considered to be a government worker, and can be prosecuted for bribery in cases like this.

The police reportedly searched the shops and houses of all three and discovered many illegally reconstructed cars. Because of the fierce competition between garages, it is suspected that many garage owners try to cut corners avoiding the purchase of many expensive parts that must be replaced by the law for the inspection. This case is said to represent just the tip of an iceberg.
