Dugong Habitat Inspected

Date Posted: 2001-04-20

A member of the Natural Resources Defense Committee (NRDC) visited Okinawa Thursday for the first time to investigate the dugong’s alleged habitat off the coast of Henoko, Nago City, the site of the planned relocation facility for MCAS Futenma.

Researcher, Robert Apel, 32, held a discussion with some 35 residents of Nago City, and said the existence of the U.S. bases in Okinawa is well known in the U.S. but not the local environmental issues. He added that NRDC would use its media connections to bring up the public interest. He visited the Henoko coast the next day and promised to take the case back to the US.
