200 Days to World Uchinanchu Festival

Date Posted: 2001-04-20

An event marking 200 days before the “World Uchinanchu Festival in Okinawa 2001” was held Sunday at a square in front of the Okinawa Prefecture Office.

The chairman of the festival organizing committee, Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine and the well-known Okinawan band, Diamantes, that has been selected to sing the event’s theme song, and many others participated to promote the event. The festival is scheduled for four days stating November first.

An estimated 300,000 Okinawans have emigrated mainly to South and North America and to Hawaii since 1899. The number of emigrants decreased since 1960’s when Okinawa was preparing to reunite with Japan during Japan’s time of high economic growth. The first World Uchinanchu Festival was held in 1990 on purpose of keeping the identity of overseas Okinawans and establishing a worldwide human network. This year’s event is the third and many emigrants are expected to come home for the event.
