Let’s Not Live in The PastBy: Pat Fleming Date Posted: 2000-09-22 We, U.S. and Okinawan, can make a difference. The Okinawans are a proud people and many Okinawans are Americans to boot. Lord Knows, Americans are made up of all peoples. If you don't like what's on T.V., turn to another channel. If you don't like what you see, correct it. We all have the right to voice an opinion, but remember the story about the boy who cried wolf. After crying (complaining) numerous times, no one listened anymore. Case in point, the G-8 Summit. With all the Base Problem Press that this Island generated, the current consensus of the world is "Okinawa, oh that little island where they have so much violence" or "is that all they do there?" Well so much for tourism, yeah a much needed negative boost in the wrong direction - especially in the current degraded economy. For R.K.(Too many hits to the Head), I am not sure of the boxer’s Age but it could be possible that he remembers the LORAN Station that was between Henoko and Aha along route 331. It closed in the late 80's or early 90's. The station was a U.S. Coast Guard Station. Since that time it has been manned by JSDF personnel, (not as a LORAN...LORAN is obsolete now days). Now I am not sure if there is still a U.S. Coast Guard Detachment here, possibly at Kadena, I don't know...but it wouldn't surprise me. The Coast Guard has a Honorable past, (war and peacetime) and needs to train as a counterpart of the U.S. Navy. See, The Coast Guard falls under the Secretary of the Navy in time of war. There are now no US Coast Guards in Okinawa – Ed. |
