Former Governor Declares Candidacy

Former Okinawa Governor Masahide Ohta, 75, announced officially Tuesday at a hotel in Naha City that would run in the House of Councilors, or the Upper House of the Japanese Parlament election scheduled for July. He stated that he would try to win a seat through the proportional representation votes representing the Social Democratic Party.

Ota declared that he decided to run in the election because he has come to the conclusion that it is impossible to solve the issues affecting Okinawa Prefecture without a voice in the national politics. He asked for votersf support from the whole country. He also said that it is more advantageous for his causes to speak in the national assembly, and it is mandatory to increase the support for Okinawan issues nation wide. He said he has the responsibility as a person who survived WWU, to stop the current political currents that in his opinion put the country in danger.
