Voters shun re-vote at Tomishiro election

Date Posted: 2003-02-28

The second election in Tomishiro Village didnít go much bettere than the first. Many voters stayed home during the second election on Sunday. The second election was organized after the court ordered the first electionís results null and void.

The court ruled that the a new election had to be held after some city workers found a box full of unaccounted ballots under a table in the Election Administration Committee office following the first election last November. Two unsuccessful candidates sued the committee and its chairman, and the court ordered a new vote. The new election didnít help the pair. Both lost again.

Officials note that the real losers were Tomishiro taxpayers who must fork out some •12 million to cover costs of the extra election. Many voted with their feet and stayed home in droves with only 58 percent of eligible voters casting ballots. Some 73.5 percent of Tomishiro Village cast votes in November. ďThis is nonsense and absolute waste of money, it really makes me mad,Ē one Tomishiro resident fumed.
