Invigorating Foot, Leg and Shoulder Massage From Corutier

By: Stephen Carr

Following last week’s article on massage, this week we sample a different style. In the Korinza shopping mall on the second floor is a salon called Corutier, which advertises on a large banner outside the shopping center. The banner features a pair of foot silhouettes, among the kanji characters.

Corutier, which also dresses hair and does facials, has an ante room where customers are invited to sit on reclining chairs. Their feet are bathed in buckets divided into two compartments with bumpy surfaces on which to rest the soles. These are plugged into the wall and a send a continuously bubbling stream of warm water swirling around the feet.

It is pleasant and relaxing. After ten minutes a bell sounds and the masseuse dries your feet. She massages the feet with her hands and a wooden instrument designed to press specific points on the soles of the feet and toes.

The theory behind oriental foot massage is that each part of the sole has a corresponding area of the body. If an organ such as the liver or heart is not in healthy condition, foot masseurs claim to be able to tell by pressing a certain part of the foot, which will be tender to the touch. Invigorating these areas is supposed to help the condition of the affected organ or body area.

Whether or not customers accept the theory, a foot massage is undoubtedly therapeutic. You feel renewed after a session, which costs ¥1500.

Corutier does not stop at the ankles. After the feet have been given a good workout, the masseuse applies oil to each leg in turn and vigorously massages them up to knee level. This good value half hour massage is a boon to tired shoppers. The manageress said I was the first Westerner to try her service. She would welcome more custom from the bases.

If you would like a foot and shoulder massage, you go through an arch into a room with some massage couches . One of these is shoulder and back massage. You are invited to change out of your clothes into light cotton, instructed to lie on your back and a large towel is placed over you.

The couch has some inbuilt electronic massage pads, which slowly knead and stretch your neck and back. The masseuse goes away when it is switched on. It is hypnotically soothing and it is hard not to fall asleep.

A bell sounds when it ends and she returns. The massage technique here is to reach under your back and use your own weight to facilitate the necessary pressure. It is an unusual but effective method.

The arms and upper chest are also given the treatment. With a masseuse on each arm, the customer feels pampered here, without paying a fortune. The cost of this session is ¥4000. Various other services like body waxing are also offered.

Directions: Coming out of Kadena Gate 2 onto Highway 23, take a left then an immediate right. Korinza Shopping mall is a huge building on the right. Another way to approach it is from the Route 330 turning into Park Avenue. It is right at the end of Park Avenue. Korinza has upper level parking.
