Date Posted: 2000-09-22

Promissory notes and checks worth a total of 40 million or $2.2 million were missing from the Okinawa Gravel Industry Association office in Akebono, Naha City. Officials at the association found the safe open and a cashbox that had been inside cut open when they returned to work Wednesday morning. According to Naha Police the door to the office was intact, indicating that the thieves had picked the lock in order to gain entry. The safe and the cashbox inside had been opened by using a blowtorch. Investigators believe that it took several people to stage the robbery. The office had been closed all Tuesday because of the typhoon.
