Typhoon Casualties: Reefs and Phone Lines

Date Posted: 2000-09-22

Life is returning to normal after Typhoon Seimay left the island. The biggest casualty seems to be the reefs around the island. The exceptionally heavy rainfall during the typhoon caused an extensive flow of red soil into the ocean. The damage seems to be exceptionally heavy in the northern parts of Okinawa. A landslide in Seragaki, Onna Village, damaged a house, and a main road was partially buried by a landslide in Nago. 928 households were without telephone connections as of Thursday morning. Air traffic resumed from Wednesday afternoon, but still 89 flights were cancelled.
