Planned Plastic Reprocessing Facility Causing Problem

Date Posted: 2001-04-14

A plan to build a reprocessing facility to handle disposed plastic used in agriculture in Itoman industrial area has ran into stiff opposition from some local companies.

Itoman City officials say that the planned facility does not need a public debate before its construction since it is not a processing facility for industrial waste. The facility reprocesses disposed plastic that has been used for greenhouses, and plastic pots for agriculture, and turns them into oil. The oil will be then reused in various ways.

The designer of the facility, Nanbushinkoukai, claims that there will be no emissions or noise from the facility. They say that it is completely self-sufficient and it will run only about five hours during each working day. Those companies opposing the plan, mainly food related enterprises, insist this facility being located in the same neighborhood would create a bad image for their industry. They are demanding a proper explanation from city officials.
