Getting Ready for Shiimi

Date Posted: 2001-04-14

Shiimi, an Okinawan custom of annual cleaning and visiting the family graves, started from Thursday Apr. 5. On this occasion, people clean the gravesite before praying and having a party with their ancestors spirits.

Nishinutamaudun at Shuri, a grave belonging to a royal family from the Ryukyu Kingdom era, was cleaned by its keeper, Thursday, to be ready for about 200 descendants of the family to visit. This year’s party is due on Sunday. The keeper is also responsible for preparing food for those people. His biggest concern now is the weather after he completed the cleaning and orders for the food were on the way.
