303 Mongooses Caught

Date Posted: 2001-04-14

Okinawa Prefecture has worked on its controversial project aiming at exterminating all mongooses in the prefecture since last October. The prefecture environmental officials deemed to project necessary in order to protect rare and endangered indigenous animals in Yambaru, Northern Okinawa. Until the end of March, 303 mongooses have been caught. The number caught is less than the project planners expected but they say it has proven that the animals are spread even in Yambaru. Officials set 800 traps expecting to catch the same amount. Apart from the mongooses, more than 200 cats were also trapped.
