Wind power construction project completed in Aguni

Date Posted: 2000-09-22

An official opening ceremony of a Wind Mill Hybrid System (Wind Power) was held in Aguni Island located about 45 miles east of Okinawa’s main island was held today. The wind generator site was constructed by Okinawa Electric Power Co. The power generated by the new mills will be stored in a bank of batteries. Officials say that the wind generator system is very suitable to the needs of small islands around Okinawa to augment existing conventional power units.

Until now, the power needs of Aguni were taken care of with a 700 kW diesel generator. However, its power was not enough during the hot summer months when the need for electric power peaks because of air conditioning, and the situation was expected to become worse in the very near future.

The new wind generator towers 44.2 m tall and it has wind blades eight meters long. The wind generator stands at the Mahana point on the western shore of the island. Local officials expect the site to become the newest sightseeing point on the island.
