Twelve Stalking Cases Prosecuted Since November

Date Posted: 2001-04-14

Okinawa Prefecture Police published a report, Thursday, on “The Number Of Stalking Cases After The Law Enforcement”. According to the report, the number cases that were prosecuted in court totaled twelve since the law was enacted last November.

The report said that the police had received 219 inquiries on cases related to alleged stalking last year, which was nearly eight times as many as the previous year. This year the number has increased even more that has prompted the police to increase the number of advisers to deal with the cases. The Stalker Law was applied to only one case out of the twelve prosecuted cases. Other criminal charges and laws were applied to the rest of the cases.

The police say the maximum penalty stipulated by the Stalker Law is one year of imprisonment, but using other criminal laws, covering such law violations as illegal entry to a private house and threats, they can deal with stalkers stricter.
