Ammunition Found at Gushikawa Garbage Dump

Date Posted: 2001-04-14

A total of 526 blank shots and one live cartridge were found on two occasions Monday and Wednesday at a recyclable garbage storage site in Gushikawa City. The Gushikawa City Police did not identify the exact location where the ammunition was found.

The police are investigating the case on suspicion of being a violation of the gunpowder control law. The length of the live cartridge is about 5.2 cm. The blanks are about 4.8 cm long.

The ammunition turned out to be the type used for field maneuvers by U.S. Forces. This fact was confirmed after experts from U.S. Marine Corps checked them at the request of Gushikawa Police. According to the police, the cartridges were made in between ・6 and ・7 for M16 rifles. How the ammunition ended up in the dump and where they came from is still under police investigation.
