JSDF fighterís forced landing in Naha

Date Posted: 2000-09-22

A Japanese Self Defense Air Force F4 Phantom fighter jet was forced to make an emergency landing at Naha Airport after one of its two engines developed trouble. No one was injured in the accident, and the fighter landed safely, but the airport was forced to halt its civilian operations for seven minutes.

Another fighter pilot flying in tandem noticed the fighterís left engine emitting smoke and notified the pilot, who then requested a permit for an emergency landing. Local citizenís groups immediately filed a protest with the JSDAF Okinawa Headquarters and demanded guarantees that the fighter jets do not pose a safety risk to the public.
