World Record Breaking Tug-of-War in Naha

The Naha Festival takes place next week from Saturday October 7 to Monday 9th on the Event Stage, Route 58, Naha City. At 4 pm on Saturday there will be an entertainment show and traditional parade on Kokusai Street. At 12.40 on Sunday there will be a traditional parade and at 4pm the Giant Tug of War takes place on Route 58 and Kokusai Street in Naha. Certified as the biggest tug of war in the world by the Guinness Book of Records, two teams, East and West pull on a rope 186 meters long, 1.56 meters wide and weighing over 40 tonnes. The festival has its origins in praying for a good rice harvest. The outcome of the contest was supposed to help shamans predict the future. In addition to the parades, entertainment and Giant Tug of War, there will be fireworks on these three days. This is one of the four biggest festivals in Okinawa. An estimated 270,000 people will turn out to see it.
