Good Food and Wine Served Unhurriedly by the Sea Wall

By: Dinner Gong

Date Posted: 2000-09-15

The Sunabe sea wall is popular with divers and there are some restaurants in the area catering to their needs during the day. Many of these places offer snacks, simple fare or take away foods. After dark there are not many sophisticated places offering fine dining primarily to romantically inclined couples.

One restaurant however that does, is France Shokudo, which specializes in good cooking for customers willing, or perhaps insistent on taking their time. France Shuko is a million miles removed from McDonald’s. This is neither junk food nor fast food, yet its prices will not break the bank.

The basic model for France Shokudo is the type of restaurant run by a family in a provincial town in France. That is to say: you can expect high quality food, you can easily while away a couple of hours in there and there is a lack of pretension or snobbery. The interior is nicely decorated, but not swamped in gilded furniture or velvet drapes. There is a certain formality in the bow tied uniforms of the serving staff. But this is not a stuffy, starchy place. There are pleasant touches such as the notice urging customers “Please feel free to ask for more bread if you want it” and “Please feel free to take away your unfinished wine”.

This is what DG and his companion did after they had polished off a bottle of the house wine (which changes every day) and ordered another, which they were not quite able to finish.

The owner explained that he has a good selection of wines but he is not aiming to make great profits from his cellar. They are more to provide an affordable, agreeable complement to the food. Thus many of these good quality imported reds and whites cost not much more than 1000 yen, which strikes DG as a very good deal indeed.

The day DG and his rooting partner dined at France Shokudo, the house wine was an Italian red, San Giovese at 1,300 yen. It was pleasant, tangy, a bit dry and whetted their appetites for the bottle they took home, a Cabernet Sauvignon at 1500 yen from Chile, Santa Rita, robust, young and fresh. Wine is also sold by the glass here at 400 yen and the selection includes bottles from France, Chile, Germany and Italy.

This restaurant has been going 14 years and although the man who started it got his idea for a take-your-time Midi-Provence style eatery while he was in France, it does not serve exclusively French food. Rather, the restaurant has evolved its own style. This includes Mediterranean cooking originating in various countries as well as local ways of cooking for example, king size prawns.

The menu offers combinations including appetizers, soups, fish and meat dishes, dessert and tea or coffee. Main dishes vary according to the day. Prices range from 1500 to 3000 yen.

DG arrived at France Shokudo before any other diners and in the next couple of hours the restaurant gradually filled. The location is on a second floor with a spectacular view of the sea and if you are early enough to get one of the tables by the picture windows, the views of crashing waves and sunsets are dramatic.

Except for one group, the other diners were in couples. All customers aside from Dinner Gong were Japanese and the ten pairs looked like 30-something professional types.

France Shokudo would like a more international clientele. DG thinks anyone who likes good food and wine, served at an unhurried pace in a relaxed atmosphere would enjoy this restaurant.

Directions: Going from the Kadena Circle towards Chatan, pass McDonald’s and Sunbird Pachinko on your right. Immediately take a right at the traffic light, pass through the second traffic light. Pass the next intersection and France Shokudo, with a long staircase and directly opposite the sea wall, is on the left.
