Giant Wasp Hive Menace No Match For Police

Date Posted: 2000-09-15

A resourceful police officer removed a giant wasp hive, with a little help from his wife, from a tangerine orchard in Izumi, Motobu Town. Local residents and the owner of the orchard had complained about ever-growing hive since April. The owner of the orchard was worried that the wasps would keep people from entering his orchard for the traditional “Mikangari” or tangerine harvest, as some visitors had already been stung.

Local police officer Akira Oshiro came up with a novel idea. With the help of his wife he created a large sack from an old raincoat. His wife donated an old traditional Okinawan wide-brimmed woman’s hat called “hanagasa” that they placed at the bottom of the sack in order to keep it open.

Oshiro then wrapped the sack around the nest and was able to remove it without getting stung even once. He then transported the sack and the hive to be disposed of.

Officers at Motobu Police Station say that they are planning to keep Oshiro’s sack at the station as a reminder of human ingenuity, and also because "You never know when someone might need it again."
