Contest for Urasoe Mayor’s Seat Heats Up

Date Posted: 2000-09-15

Three hopefuls have announced their tentative plans for the candidacy for the post of Urasoe City Mayor in the election scheduled to be held Feb. 11, 2001. Minoru Higa and Mitsuo Gima both representing Liberal Democratic Party are planning to challenge the incumbent Kenichi Miyagi.

Many within conservative parties are urging Higa and Gima to agree on a single candidate in order not to split the conservative vote. In the last election, Miyagi who is backed by leftist and socialists parties, won largely because of the conservative vote was split.

This time he is thought to be hampered by his decision to accept moving the Naha Military Port to a new site on a landfill off Camp Kinser. Gima is proposing speeding up the construction of the landfill and the construction of a road connecting the new port with the Naha Airport.
