Liberty Patrols Should Include Japanese Say Lawyers

Date Posted: 2000-09-08

The Okinawa City Bar Association is insisting that the three-men U.S. military town patrols that begin to patrol Okinawa City on weekends starting today, include at least one Japanese. According to the association 40 percent of the association members’ customers are American. The association says that a Japanese member in the patrol is essential because of the language barrier. The association also criticizes the fact that the patrols are out only until midnight when establishments serving alcohol become off-limits to U.S. service members. “If there’s going to be trouble, that’s more likely to occur after midnight,” an association spokesman said.

He also said that the association strongly opposes the midnight limit to drinking. “Okinawa City is famous for its late night life. Putting us off-limits after nidnight is definitely hurting us,” the spokesman said. Contrary to a report in last week’s Update, the patrols are not Military Police. Local police have consistently refused to allow MPs to patrol their streets. The new patrols at the moment consist of senior NCOs or junior officers from all services.
