Taiwanese Fishermen Questioned on Illegal Entry

Date Posted: 2000-09-08

Four Taiwanese fishermen came ashore illegally while their boat took shelter in Naha Port from a storm. The captain of the boat reported to the 18th Maritime Safety Agency that the four had jumped overboard around midnight Tuesday, and swam ashore from the vessel that was moored off Naminoue.

The police found the four sleeping in a park in Wakasa Thursday, took them into custody and handed over to immigration. When questioned, the four men, aged between 21 and 25, told the immigration officials that they had wanted to look for well-paying jobs in Japan and become rich. Immigration officials continue to question the four in order to find out whether they have contacts in Japan and possible connections with other illegal immigrants here.
