New Road Allows Free Fun and Picnics on the Beach

Date Posted: 2000-09-08

Ocean Park is a stretch of man-made sandy beaches on both sides of a 6.1-kilometer long “Ocean Road” that connects Yonashiro Town on Okinawa’s main island and Ikei and Hamahiga Islands. The newly completed beaches are proving to be a very popular destination for families seeking a place for picnics and fun on the beach. The park has showers and pavilions for barbeque, all free for people to use. Residents of Henzan Village, who began building the road in 1961 by using limestone they carved from their island, first started the ocean road construction.

The road was never completed and was destroyed several times in typhoons. Finally an American oil company promised to construct the road to access land for oil storage and a refinery. The concrete road was opened in 1971. The latest improvement work on the road began in 1995 and was completed earlier this year.
