Harmonica Playing to Raise Money for Heart Transplant

Date Posted: 2000-09-08

Yoshio Tamae, 52, has a mission. He plays his harmonica at public places on weekends passing the hat for donations, which goes towards securing a heart transplant for Singo Arasaki, 28. So far he has collected 2.5 million, far short perhaps, of the 30 million estimated to pay for the operation, but he is getting there.

As his fame has grown donations are starting to pour in, regardless of whether he is playing or not. Arasaki is currently waiting for a suitable donor heart in an Osaka hospital. I have taught harmonica at community halls and schools as a volunteer for a long time, but now I really feel that this little instrument has a real purpose, Tamae says.
