New “Confusing” ¥2000 Banknote a Flop

Date Posted: 2000-09-08

The new ¥2,000 banknote introduced into circulation in the beginning of July is proving to be much less of a hit among citizens than the Bank of Japan anticipated. The new banknote features Okinawa’s landmark Shuri Gate on one side. Many people complain that the new note’s color is too close to the color of a ¥5,000 banknote making it easy to confuse the two.

The Bank of Japan Naha Branch Office Manager Masato Uchida says that the bank has plenty of the new banknotes in reserve, but very few people are requesting them. “We have had Japanese currency on display in our branch office for this past month, but from the comments that I hear, the ¥2,000 banknote is not very popular,” Uchida commented.
