Kitaru - Italy meets Okinawa

Date Posted: 2003-02-22

If you are looking to visit an Okinawan pasta restaurant with a nice romantic view, you should try out Kitaru. It is located on the second floor of Dragon Palace, right beneath the ferris wheel in Mihama. In fact, if you sit out on Kitaru’s terrace you will have a full frontal view of the ferris wheel. Just look for the antique piano with a bunch of pictures of pasta all over it.

If you are up to trying an Okinawan version of pasta, then you can’t miss trying out their “Kitaru Original Pasta Genova Style.” Using Okinawan noodles instead of regular spaghetti noodles, it is seasoned with a basil sauce with pieces of pork. Sound weird? Don’t knock it ‘till you try it!

Another favorite is the “Shrimp Cream Pasta”, which comes topped with goya. As bitter as goya may taste for some palates, it is incredibly healthy.

There are many other delicious pasta dishes to choose from - Arrabiata (spicy seafood pasta), Amatriciana (tomato sauce with cheese and basil), mushroom cream spaghetti (with 3 kinds of mushrooms) and much more! There is even a spice rack on the counter for customers to season their pasta with what they want! For example, you can order a cream based pasta and sprinkle curry or chili powder in it to give it a totally different taste. Just use your imagination!

Although Kitaru is a pasta restaurant, you will also find curry rice on the menu. Make sure you check out their wine cellar and their Okinawan shiikuwaasaa juice (my personal favorite!).

Next to your fork, you will find a slightly large spoon on your table. This spoon is not meant to be used for your soup but for aiding in twirling your pasta.

Dollars are accepted, and although they do not have a bilingual staff, their simple picture menu is sufficient to be able to make your choice and order. Kitaru is definitely a must for people who love trying new things!
