Date Posted: 2000-09-08

A three-day folk play performed annually in Tarama Island started yesterday. This year’s festivities were marred by an accident when a man fell overboard from a chartered ferry and drowned. The man was recovered two hours later dead. The play that is performed to ensure good harvest is an officially designated “Important Cultural Asset.” The event attracts hundreds of spectators who arrived at the tiny island on chartered ferries from Miyako and Ishigaki islands. Tarama is located about midway between Miyako and Ishigaki islands southeast of Okinawa main island, and has a permanent population of about 2,000 people.
