Mass Punishment Makes Our Leadership Look Like Fools

By: Concerned Military Member on Okinawa

I would like to voice my concerns over this so called lifting of the curfew here on Okinawa. I have but one question. What has changed ? The reality is, nothing is changing. This is just being done to give the perception that things are getting better and hopefully lift morale. All off base establishments that serve alcohol between the hours of 2400 and 0500 each day are still off limits. Is this a joke? This change will serve no purpose, if anything it will make relations with our Okinawan neighbors worse by having young troops out drinking at local parks, seawalls, parking lots and any place that is not off limits. I ask you, what types of establishments are open at that time of night that donít serve alcohol? Why not just come out and say it. What you are really trying to do is stop all alcohol consumption between the hours of 2400 and 0500.

Iím a 40 year old man, I donít need another man to tell me when and where I can drink a beer. If the leaders making these BS rules would look at the facts, they would see that most of the problems that have happened on Okinawa in regards to the military have been by persons in the lower pay grades. Why must our military leaders use mass punishment as a means of dealing with those few individuals who will not comply with local or military law?

I have spent over 20 years in the military and this is one of my saddest moments, when our military leaders resort to this type of leadership to force people to follow. In my opinion this does nothing but undermine the chain of command and make troops question the leadership which they follow. It makes our leadership look like fools with knee jerk reactions to a problem.

The solution is quite simple, throw the book at the ones that make trouble and show a little trust in the ones that will gladly give their life in their countryís defense.
