First Okinawan in seven years wins 10th Okinawa Marathon

The 10th Okinawa Marathon was held on Feb. 17 in Okinawa City and its environs in weather considered warm for running. A total of 8,656 people participated in the 42.195-kilometer marathon, which started and finished at the prefectural athletic park. Competing in the general category were 8,012 runners, with 73 percent completing the full course. In the menís category Masaki Higa from Ginowan won his first race with a time of 2 hours, 26 minutes and 44 seconds. It marked the first time in seven years that an Okinawan has won the race. Yoriko Miyagi from Sashiki took the womenís category with a time of 2 hours, 56 minutes and 45 seconds. American runner Karen Oudekerk finished second in 3 hours, 18 minutes and 28 seconds.
