A Guide to the White Sandy Beaches

By: John Chandler

Date Posted: 2001-04-06

It is springtime and the kids are soon going to be out of school for an entire week. Mom, are you tired of reef walks? Dad are you fatigued with having to carry the little ones across the sea urchin filled limestone that graces most of our shores? Well if so, and with the impending free time of children soon to be at your doorstep, please read on because I want to share with you some of the best BEACHES, NOT REEFS, the island has to offer.

Everyone appreciates the peaceful tranquility at Okuma. It is a great getaway but what if you don\'t have reservations and still want a lovely getaway without all the rules? I suggest you start your search at the keyboard of your computer! Click over to Japan Updates BEACH guide at JU Beaches. I can guarantee your world will open when you review your choices there. Great information is included for your discerning choices as well.

If surfing the \'Net does not interest you then here are a few of my favorites. First, get in your van and go directly to Mama-san Beach on Ikei Island. I wrote about the lure of Mama-san Beach last year. Hope you have not lost my directions but if you did please click over to JU Story 16 for directions. This is a real MOM and POP beach that you will come to enjoy. Half the fun is finding it. It is really worth the search and for my 400 it is the best family beach on the island. Here you find plenty of white sand and NO URCHINS to dodge either. Take a flotation device when you go here. Mom or Dad will have to be lifeguard so be alert and have a great time here.

Next, and going to the other end of our lovely island, try the beautiful drive down south and discover Channel Crevices near Peace Prayer Park. This is a great Spring Day outing for the entire family. For detail directions please review our archives at JU Story 18. Here at Channel Crevices you will find restrooms and at least a mile of white sandy beach for the kids to run themselves ragged on. There is reef walking here, if you are so inclined, and an awesome lagoon that is right off the pages of a tropical magazine ad. I have been diving there all winter so I know it is ready for you too.

Lastly, don\'t forget about the simplicity of Kadena Marina. This is a great place to take the kids early in the morning. It will assure you that they will take an afternoon nap. You can really wear them out here. The new restrooms and pavilions are great and you can even have lunch at the new Sea-Side Restaurant.

Lucky we live Okinawa. Please get out and discover a new beach during this Spring Break. I sure hope this will point you in the right direction toward your new discovery soon. See you at the Beach. I will be the bald guy lathering his head with copious amounts of SPF 45 this year.
