Governor Readies for Visit to U.S.

Date Posted: 2001-04-06

Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine is reportedly putting final touches on his planned visit to the U.S. that is scheduled to take place just after the Golden Week holidays in May.

The purpose of his visit is to seek the reduction of U.S. forces stationed in Okinawa, reconsideration of the Status of Forces Agreement between US and Japan, and the 15-year limit he wants to set for the replacement base for the MCAS Futenma. He also plans to visit some businesses in the West Coast in order to invite them to come to set up a shop in Okinawa.

His visiting will take about two weeks. The prefecture officials are negotiating with the Department of Defense and the Department of State in the U.S. through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo, to organize talks between leading members of those departments and the governor during his visit. The governorís schedule will be made public soon.
