Tourist Decrease Not Helped by “Rude” “Dangerous” Locals

Date Posted: 2000-09-01

The Okinawan tourism industry’s high hopes of a boom in the aftermath of the G-8 Summit are fizzling. With the summit gone the number of tourists visiting the prefecture in July – August period is down some 23 percent, and according to local officials, there is no sign of recovery. They say that they are likely to miss the target of 4.8 million visitors this year.

Officials stressed that additional steps should be taken to enhance the image of Okinawa by educating taxi drivers and other people who are in daily contact with tourists. They claim that those people are often perceived rude and sometimes outright dangerous by mainland tourists because they are too brash and vocal in dealing with disputes among themselves and outsiders.
