WWII era Dud Removed in Shuri

Date Posted: 2001-04-06

An unexploded, World War II era US-made bomb was discovered Monday in Bengadake Park in Shuri, Naha City. A landslide that had occurred at the site uncovered the bomb.

The bomb weighed about 250 kg and was 30 cm in diameter and one meter long. Naha Police Department, JSDF and Naha city assembled a task force at Shuri Branch Office of the City Hall to remove the ordnance quickly as the bomb was deemed to be in danger of tumbling down the hillside. About 6,000 residents living in the area within 600 m radius from the bomb were forced to leave their homes. A JSDF ordnance removal team disposed of the bomb overnight and the residents were allowed to return to their homes.
