Sevicemembers To Patrol Night Areas From September

Date Posted: 2000-09-01

Military Police out of uniform and unarmed will start patrolling areas in Nakanomachi and Chuo Park Avenue, Kitamae area in Chatan and areas outside MCAS Futenma Gate 1 from September 1. The patrols will be on the streets Friday and Saturday nights from 10 p.m. to midnight and on Sundays when the following Monday is a US holiday.

The three-men patrols are not empowered to make an arrest, but they can report suspected incidents of underage drinking to the military police on-base and the Japanese police. Proprietors of bars and other drinking establishments are opposing the patrols saying that they will have an adverse impact on their businesses.

Military officials say that the patrols are aimed at preventing any incident that may involve U.S. troops. The U.S. military authorities have long requested establishing such patrols but have been prevented from having them because of opposition from the Japanese local police.
