Naha Market Hall Closes for Good

Date Posted: 2001-04-06

The second Makishi public market closed last Saturday after 32 years in business. The market was the oldest of public markets in Naha. Some shops remained open until the last day as their staff cleaned the inside of the building and got ready to leave for good.

A barbershop owner who had been running his shop at the market since it was built could not hide his sorrow and anxiety, as he did not know where to move the business afterwards. About 80 shops were in the market building at the time of its opening in 69. Influenced by the recent emergence of big malls and other large business center outside of the central Naha, the number of customers coming in has been in steady decline. At the same time, the building was becoming old and the city finally decided to close the market.
